A research team led by Professor Jianxing He from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University published a groundbreaking study titled "Pig-to-human lung xenotransplantation into a brain-dead recipient" in Nature Medicine (IF: 50), reporting for the first time a case of genetically engineered pig lung transplantation into a brain-dead human recipient. Fructose is ubiquitous in modern diets—from fruits and sweetened beverages to candies and baked goods. However, emerging research reveals a critical concern: excessive fructose consumption during early life may severely disrupt brain development. On June 11, 2025, a team led by Justin S.A. Perry at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) published a landmark study in Nature titled "Early life high fructose exposure disrupts microglia function and impedes neurodevelopment". Their findings sound a critical alarm: Exposure to high-fructose environments during pivotal developmental windows (pregnancy and the neonatal period) directly impairs microglia—the brain’s essential "custodian" cells—through a GLUT5-dependent mechanism. This disrupts synaptic pruning and neuronal clearance, compromises neurodevelopment, and significantly elevates lifelong risks of cognitive deficits and anxiety-like behaviors.

A Listeria outbreak initially surfaced in early 2025 across 21 U.S. states, resulting in 38 infections and 12 deaths. The investigation revealed the earliest cases actually date back to 2018, with more than half of all infections occurring in 2024 and 2025. Listeria infections in the U.S. typically peak during the summer months.

Three oncologists at Hong Kong's Princess Margaret Hospital earlier developed acute gastroenteritis, after which one died. The Hong Kong Center for Health Protection released the results of its investigation last week and found that there was no link between the three people's illnesses. Yuen Kwok-yung, Chair Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong, who was in charge of the investigation, said that the team found rotavirus type C in different samples from the deceased doctors, and concluded that the signs of the disease that appeared in the patients before their deaths were caused by the virus.

Japanese encephalitis (JE), caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), is a severe mosquito-borne disease endemic to Asia. Current studies widely recognize pigs and birds as the primary "amplifying hosts" of JEV, where mosquitoes transmit the virus to humans after feeding on infected animals, perpetuating the natural transmission cycle. However, the role of other mammals, such as sheep, in JEV transmission has long been unclear. In recent years, suspected JEV infections with neurological symptoms have been sporadically reported in sheep flocks in China, but direct evidence was lacking.
