Meningococcal disease, caused by the capsulated Gram-negative bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, is a communicable disease primarily transmitted through close contact or droplet aerosols, can rapidly progress and cause severe complications or death.

There are at least 12 identified N. meningitidis serogroups, including A, B, C, W, X, and Y. Current quadrivalent capsular polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccines effectively prevent disease caused by four serogroups (A, C, Y, and W); however, these vaccines do not provide protection against serogroup B (MenB).

Given the recent outbreaks of meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) on school campuses, developing a vaccine for serogroup B is an urgent public health priority. vaccine development has been challenging due to the poor immunogenicity of polysaccharide-based vaccines. Consequently, vaccine development has shifted focus towards identifying outer membrane proteins that can elicit broad and protective immune responses. FHbp, NadA and NHBA are three promising MenB vaccine candidates.
